Smart, Sir George Thomas. Knighted in Dublin, 1811. Chorister in the Chapel Royal, London, under Dr Edmund Ayrton; pupil of Dr Thomas Dupuis (organ) and Ayrton (composition). Organist of St. James’ Chapel, Hampstead Road, London, 1791; the Chapel Royal, St. James’ Palace, London, 1822-67. Composer to the Chapel Royal, 1838. Conducted the Philharmonic Society, 1813-44; Lenten Oratorios, 1813-25. Composed church music, glees, sonatinas for piano, &c. Uncle of Henry Smart. b. London, England, May 10th, 1776; d. Bedford Square, London, Feb. 23rd, 1867.
